Which peptides are studied in relation to exosomes?
A research-catalogue summary of peptides and proteins investigated alongside exosomes, spanning podocyte markers, LL-37, FGF21, Cerebrolysin, and others. All findings are from laboratory or clinical studies and are not i
The peptides and proteins most frequently studied in relation to exosomes include podocyte-specific proteins (nephrin, podocalyxin, Wilms' tumor protein WT-1), the antimicrobial peptide LL-37, fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), and the neurotrophic peptide preparation Cerebrolysin. These are investigated as exosomal cargo, as modifiers of exosome release, or as components of exosome-based therapeutic strategies. Identifiers such as sequence, formula, and molecular weight are not provided in the evidence block for these compounds.
The work centres on pathways including EGFR signaling, AMPK/mTOR, and TGF-β/SMAD, as well as on exosome-mediated intercellular communication in kidney, skin, and neural tissues.
Research Studies
Podocyte-specific proteins and exosomes in diabetic kidney disease
A clinical study is examining podocyte-specific proteins (PSP) — nephrin, podocalyxin, and WT-1 — in urinary exosomes from African American Veterans with albuminuric stage 2 and 3 chronic diabetic kidney disease (DKD) [1]. The study compares empagliflozin, finerenone, or combination therapy. Secondary objectives include correlating exosome-based PSP with standard kidney injury biomarkers (urine albumin/creatinine ratio and estimated GFR) and with systemic inflammatory markers such as interleukins (IL-1, IL-6, IL-12) and hs-CRP [1]. This is an ongoing clinical study; no results are reported in the evidence block.
LL-37 and melanoma exosomes
In melanoma, exosomal hsa-miR-221-5p was found to suppress keratinocyte expression of the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 through impaired sustained EGFR signaling [2]. Functionally, keratinocyte-derived LL-37 curtailed melanoma cell migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition, restrained tumor growth in vivo, and was associated with a tumor immune microenvironment enriched in M1 macrophages [2]. The findings are from laboratory and animal models.
FGF21-modified exosomes and wound healing
Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21)-modified adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ADSC) exosomes were studied for their effect on wound healing [3]. The exosomes, termed Exo@FGF21, were isolated and characterized, and the study aimed to elucidate mechanisms by which they promote wound healing, including activation of fibroblast glycolysis through AMPK/mTOR signaling [3]. This work is preclinical.
Cerebrolysin-treated endothelial cell exosomes and permeability
Exosomes released by Cerebrolysin-treated cerebral endothelial cells (Cerebro-Exos) were tested in an in vitro endothelial permeability assay [4]. Cerebro-Exos showed marked differences in cargo profiles compared to exosomes from untreated cells (Naïve-Exos), being highly enriched with metabolic and tight junction-related proteins. Cerebro-Exos had a superior effect on restoring endothelial cell integrity impaired by fibrin and tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) [4]. This is an in vitro study.
Glutathione and umbilical cord blood-derived exosomes in autism spectrum disorder
A 12-month clinical study is testing whether AdiaVita (umbilical cord blood-derived stem cells and exosomes) plus glutathione improves autism symptoms more than glutathione alone in children ages 3–12 [5]. Approximately 100 children with confirmed autism are randomized to receive either monthly intravenous AdiaVita plus intravenous glutathione for 3 months, or intravenous glutathione plus a saline placebo infusion for 2 months; both groups also use a topical glutathione spray twice daily at home. Symptoms are tracked with the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) [5]. This is an ongoing clinical study; no results are reported.
Neuronal exosomes and exercise biomarkers
A clinical study is examining the brain-based biological mechanistic pathway by which exercise exerts anxiolytic effects [7]. The investigators measure brain-derived markers of mitochondrial metabolism (acetyl-L-carnitine) and inflammation (interleukin-6) using technology to isolate neuronal exosomes [7]. This is an ongoing study; no results are reported.
Wharton's jelly exosomes and liver cirrhosis
A clinical study is using autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells combined with Wharton's jelly exosomes (20 billion per dose) to stimulate hepatic cell repair in patients with liver cirrhosis [8]. The protocol involves harvesting bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells, concentrating and testing viability, then combining with a small volume (2 cc) of Wharton's jelly exosomes for intravenous administration [8]. This is an ongoing study; no results are reported.
Other peptides and exosome-related mechanisms
Additional studies have explored peptides in exosome contexts. Cancer-associated fibroblast-derived exosomes delivering Snail were investigated for promoting pancreatic cancer stemness and gemcitabine resistance via the SOCS6/HIF-1α axis [9]. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes loaded in chitosan hydrogel were studied in a full-thickness porcine skin defect model [10]. Combinatorial therapy of LL-37 and adipose-derived stem cells was examined in diabetic wound repair, focusing on NRROS-mediated crosstalk between TGF-β/SMAD and Hippo/TEAD1 axes [11]. Surface-engineered GE11-functionalized exosomes were used for EGFR-targeted peonidin delivery and suppression of SNAI1-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transition in glioma [12]. These are preclinical findings.
