This change enables more precise matching patterns without requiring multiple separate queries. Users can now construct complex search strings that capture variations within specific word structures. For instance, searching for 'metabol*' allows retrieval of terms like metabolism and metabolite simultaneously. Multiple wildcards may also be utilized within a single query string to broaden or narrow results effectively.
The authors note that this modification applies to the general PubMed interface without specifying version numbers or release dates. While the syntax improvement is significant, it does not alter the underlying indexing methodology of the database.
