What does the research say about skin elasticity?
Skin elasticity is a measurable mechanical property of the dermal extracellular matrix, governed largely by elastic fibre integrity, collagen content and hydration. This page summarises registered trials and published me
Skin elasticity is the mechanical property of skin that describes its ability to deform under load and return to its original shape; in the dermatological literature it is assessed alongside firmness, laxity and wrinkle topography, and it is treated as a downstream readout of dermal extracellular matrix integrity rather than as a target in itself. The structural basis is the elastic fibre network — elastin, fibrillin-rich microfibrils and associated scaffold proteins — together with the collagen network and stratum corneum hydration. There is no single identifier for "skin elasticity" as a substance; the identifiers that matter belong to the individual actives studied against it, and the evidence block below gives those only where a source states them.
The mechanistic work centres on the balance between elastin synthesis and enzymatic degradation: elastase activity, elastin and scaffold-related gene expression, and the matrix-remodelling pathways that fibroblasts use to maintain the dermal compartment.
Research Studies
Ergothioneine and skin elasticity in healthy adults aged 40 to 65
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial is evaluating a branded ergothioneine ingredient in healthy adults aged 40 to 65 years, with participants receiving either the active or a matching placebo once daily for 12 weeks. The primary objective concerns biomarkers of oxidative stress and healthy ageing; skin elasticity, skin hydration and inflammatory biomarkers are secondary objectives, alongside safety [1]. Because elasticity sits among the secondary endpoints, the study is designed to detect it as a supporting measure rather than as the primary claim.
Copper tripeptide and multi-target restoration of dermal elastic fibres
Published mechanistic work has examined a multitarget approach to restoring the elastic fibre network by modulating elastin production, elastase activity and scaffold protein expression simultaneously, on the reasoning that preserving elastic fibre function requires addressing synthesis, enzymatic degradation and scaffold integrity together rather than elastin synthesis alone [2]. The paper reports findings for copper tripeptide in this context. This is mechanistic and in vitro work; it does not by itself establish a clinical elasticity effect.
Cellbooster Shape and objective skin measurements after injection
A post-market clinical investigation is assessing a CE-marked hyaluronic-acid-based superficial epidermis/dermis injection filler and skinbooster, produced with a patented technology and consisting of non-crosslinked HA with L-carnitine and vitamin C, designed for reducing local puffiness by improving microcirculation and hydration. Healthy subjects with signs of facial skin ageing receive a three-session treatment with follow-up over 70 days after the initial injection session, and several objective measurements of skin are collected [3].
NPQ Plus and skin health in a single-arm study
A single-arm, open-label, prospective interventional study involving 55 participants evaluated a multi-component nutraceutical formulation containing polyphenols, nicotinamide mononucleotide, pyrroloquinoline quinone, coenzyme Q10 and a trace mineral complex in healthy adults with skin concerns. Participants consumed one sachet daily for 12 weeks, with assessments at baseline and at Weeks 4 and beyond [4]. The absence of a control arm limits what can be attributed to the formulation.
Bioactive compounds, fibroblast function and extracellular matrix integrity
A study of a dietary supplement containing natural bioactive compounds integrates in vitro and clinical approaches to examine biological processes associated with skin ageing and extracellular matrix integrity. The framing is that ageing involves declining dermal fibroblast function — reduced proliferative capacity, decreased collagen synthesis and increased oxidative and glycative damage — leading to deterioration of skin elasticity and tissue homeostasis [5].
Acetyl hexapeptide-8 and skin permeability
A review covers acetyl hexapeptide-8, a biomimetic peptide used in topical formulations intended for anti-ageing effects, scar treatment and skin rejuvenation, and described as a "botox-like" peptide on the basis of proposed modulation of neuromuscular activity. The review focuses on structure, proposed mechanisms of action, and efficacy and skin permeability [6]. Permeability is the limiting question for any topical peptide claim.
Oral collagen peptides and age-associated skin parameters
A randomised, double-blind, parallel-group controlled trial evaluated daily oral intake of a collagen peptides supplement in healthy women with visible facial wrinkles. Sixty-eight women aged 35 to 65 were enrolled and allocated 1:1 to an active control or the test product; one participant in the active control group withdrew for personal reasons and was excluded from the final analysis, leaving 67 completers [7].
NatureU Mind Care BeautyU Caps over 56 days
A 56-day, single-centre, open-label, single-arm exploratory study assessed within-participant changes after daily oral intake of a capsule product in adult women, one capsule daily for 56 days. The primary outcome was change from baseline in crow's-feet wrinkle count at Day 56 by PRIMOS CR imaging, and the secondary outcome was change from baseline in stratum corneum hydration by Corneometer CM 825; skin elasticity was among the additional exploratory outcomes, together with wrinkle topography, radiance, pigmentation, pore-related parameters, dermal thickness and density, and participant-reported measures [8].

Supporting mechanistic and post-procedure work
Additional published work supports the page without forming its core. A randomised controlled study examined a comprehensive topical regimen incorporating niacinamide, Pro-Xylane and panthenol after PicoWay laser, addressing whether such a combination delivers synergistic benefit for skin barrier repair and anti-ageing [9]. A separate study used a biological knowledge graph and molecular docking to screen peptide ingredients for type III collagen, which the authors describe as playing a key role in maintaining skin elasticity and dermal resilience [10]. Work on interface-engineered supramolecular collagen peptide nanocapsules addressed the transdermal delivery problem for hydrophilic low-molecular collagen peptides of approximately 5 kDa, where the stratum corneum limits penetration, and followed the approach from molecular assembly toward clinical translation [11]. An integrative in silico and in vitro evaluation assessed the pentapeptides Vialox and Leuphasyl for anti-ageing applications, in a context where intrinsic and extrinsic ageing drive extracellular matrix degradation, particularly of collagen and elastin [12].
