Dual-task training involves performing two different tasks simultaneously to engage both motor and cognitive systems. This approach is increasingly relevant for metabolic research and aging populations, as it addresses the decline in attentional control that occurs with age.

Researchers conducted a 2025 trial published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience involving 72 adults. Participants were divided into two groups: one completed dual-task exercises while the other received health education to improve cognitive frailty over 16 weeks. Both groups underwent pre- and post-program assessments of cognitive health.

The group engaging in dual-task training demonstrated significantly higher scores on cognitive assessments compared to the control group receiving health education alone. A subsequent 2026 study published in Age and Ageing followed 300 older adults for 18 months, finding that similar dual-task training improved reaction time and attention within six months.

Gains in visual learning and working memory persisted up to one year after the initial intervention period. These findings suggest that combining physical activity with cognitive demands may offer a viable strategy for maintaining cognitive function in aging populations.

The authors note that this approach does not require complex equipment or specialized training. Activities such as dancing, which incorporate memorization of choreography alongside physical movement, can serve as effective dual-task interventions. This method aligns with Connie Carr's long-standing practice of integrating multiple cognitive and motor tasks during her aqua fitness classes.
