Dual-task training, which involves performing two different tasks simultaneously, has emerged as a promising strategy for maintaining cognitive function in older adults. This approach integrates physical movement with mental engagement, offering a practical method to support brain health through combined motor-cognitive demands.
In a recent study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, researchers investigated whether dual-task training could mitigate age-related declines in attentional control and motor-cognitive functions. The trial involved 72 adults who were randomly assigned to either a dual-task exercise group or a health education group over a 16-week period.
Participants in the dual-task group engaged in exercises requiring simultaneous attentional focus and physical coordination, while the control group received standard health education. Cognitive assessments conducted before and after the intervention revealed that the dual-task group showed significantly higher scores compared to the control group, which demonstrated no improvements or declines.
Further research published in Age and Ageing in 2026 followed 300 older adults over an 18-month period. This study found that dual-task training resulted in improved reaction time and attention within six months, with sustained gains in visual learning and working memory observed one year later.
These findings suggest that integrating physical activity with cognitive challenges may be more effective than exercise alone for supporting brain health in aging populations.
