Which peptides are studied in relation to glycosaminoglycans?
A research-supply overview of peptides investigated alongside glycosaminoglycans, including kisspeptin-10, GHK and its derivatives, and glycosaminoglycan-based agents such as chondroitin sulfate and CACIPLIQ20, with note
Peptides studied in relation to glycosaminoglycans include kisspeptin-10 (KiSS-10), a 10-amino-acid peptide, and glycyl-histidyl-lysine (GHK), a tripeptide, along with its copper complex GHK-Cu and its palmitoylated derivative Pal-GHK. Glycosaminoglycan-based agents such as chondroitin sulfate and the heparan sulfate-containing product CACIPLIQ20 are also investigated in this context. The work centres on extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling and proteoglycan synthesis, with signalling pathways involving G-protein-coupled receptors and growth factor interactions.
Identifiers for these peptides are not provided in the evidence. For GHK, the sequence is glycyl-histidyl-lysine; GHK-Cu is a metal complex and Pal-GHK is a palmitoylated derivative [2]. Chondroitin sulfate is a natural biomacromolecule belonging to the glycosaminoglycan class and a major ECM component of proteoglycans [4]. CACIPLIQ20 contains heparan sulfate, which is described as a key element in epidermolysis bullosa [3].
Research Studies
Kisspeptin-10 and glycosaminoglycan and decorin content in human cardiac fibroblast cultures
In human cardiac fibroblast cultures, KiSS-10 was studied for its influence on glycosaminoglycan and decorin content. The study aimed to determine the effects of KiSS-10 on these ECM components and to identify the mechanism, using signalling inhibitors. Glycosaminoglycan levels were measured by the Farndale method and decorin secretion was assessed. The findings indicate that KiSS-10 regulates glycosaminoglycan and decorin content in these cells [1]. This is an in vitro study using a human cell line.
GHK and collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis in skin
GHK has been reported to enhance collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis, as well as increase nerve outgrowth and angiogenesis. These properties are associated with wound healing and the prevention or reduction of wrinkles. GHK-Cu and Pal-GHK are widely used in anti-wrinkle products [2]. The evidence does not specify the model systems for these effects.
GHK-Cu and regenerative properties in preclinical models
GHK-Cu has demonstrated regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties in preclinical models, prompting its increasing integration into aesthetic medicine [6]. This is a reference-only item; the findings are reported in preclinical models.
Chondroitin sulfate and osteoarthritis burden in adults
Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a symptomatic slow-acting drug for osteoarthritis (SYSADOA) and a glycosaminoglycan. An observational, descriptive, prospective, national study is being conducted to describe the burden of osteoarthritis and quality of life in patients treated with Structum® in Poland [4]. This study is in adult patients with osteoarthritis.
CACIPLIQ20 and wound healing in subjects with epidermolysis bullosa
CACIPLIQ20, which contains heparan sulfate, is under investigation in a clinical trial for wound healing in subjects with epidermolysis bullosa (EB). EB is a group of inherited disorders characterized by skin and mucous membrane fragility. Heparan sulfates are described as key elements in this context [3]. The trial is in subjects with EB.
Glycocalyx degradation and circulating unmeasured ions after cardiopulmonary bypass
A prospective subanalysis embedded in a randomized trial examined whether endothelial glycocalyx degradation is related to unexplained anionic burden through the release of polyanionic heparan sulfate fragments. The study reports an association between glycocalyx degradation and increased circulating unmeasured ions after cardiopulmonary bypass [5]. This is a reference-only item; the findings are from a clinical subanalysis.
Proteoglycans and bone metastasis in breast and prostate cancer
Proteoglycans act as molecular regulators in bone metastasis, a complication of advanced cancer, particularly breast and prostate cancer. The evidence describes complex interactions among tumour cells, bone-resident cells, immune populations, vascular components, and the extracellular matrix [7]. This is a reference-only item; the findings are from cancer research.
Syndecan-1 and mucosal homeostasis in inflammatory bowel disease
Intestinal epithelial Syndecan-1 (SDC1), a proteoglycan, was studied for its role in maintaining mucosal homeostasis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by enhancing Faecalibacterium prausnitzii biofilm formation. The study aimed to elucidate how SDC1 contributes to barrier function and inflammation [8]. This is a reference-only item; the findings are from IBD research.
