Mental Health Assets in Canadian Varsity Athletes and Non-Athletes
Recent research supports the promotion of mental health assets as an underutilized approach to improving mental health in sport, with findings from a Canadian study.
Promoting mental health within elite athletic environments has become a significant priority for researchers and institutions. Recent literature suggests that focusing on individual-level resources, known as mental health assets, may offer a more effective pathway to sustaining wellbeing compared to traditional interventions. This paper examines the prevalence of these assets among Canadian university students, specifically comparing those participating in varsity sports with their non-athlete peers.
The study utilized data collected from the 2023 deployment of the Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey (CCWS). Researchers analyzed responses from a large cohort of student participants to assess levels of social support, resiliency, and mental health resource literacy. The investigation aimed to determine if participation in intercollegiate athletics correlates with specific psychological strengths or vulnerabilities.
Key findings indicate that student-athletes reported significantly higher levels of all three measured mental health assets compared to non-athlete students. The sample included 1,143 student-athletes and 24,365 non-athletes. Furthermore, the data revealed that these differences were more pronounced among men than women regarding resiliency and mental health literacy. These results contribute to a growing body of work attempting to clarify the mental health landscape within intercollegiate settings.
The authors note that these findings add to somewhat inconsistent literature regarding the mental health of intercollegiate athletes relative to their non-athlete peers. While the study supports nuanced mental asset strategies for student-athletes, it does not establish causal relationships or clinical recommendations. The results should be interpreted within the context of a cross-sectional survey design and specific Canadian university populations.
